June 06 Ignorance is bliss but knowledge is power This title reminds me of a thought-provoking question: which one will you choose, to be an ignorant but happy pig, or the knowledgeable but painful Socrates?
A pig lives totally without worries. It has two main goals in its life: eating and sleeping, happily and satisfiedly. It knows nothing about its life, about its future, about the world. Ignorance is the source of its bliss.Socrates was painful because he knew too much. He meditated upon the meaning of life and other profound issues of philosophy; he cared for others’ misfortune and sadness, and the whole human-being’s; he wondered when the universe got started and how. The more he knew, the more deeply he thought, the more pain he suffered. My answer to this question is: I prefer the latter. We can’t simply say that happiness is good and pain is bad. Both of them are indispensible to life, and every one has his own definition about happiness and pain. I feel happy after discovering that my boyfriend is hanging out with another girl secretly because it makes me realize how unfaithful this guy is and gives me opportunity to get started in time for another one. Those who think that ignorance can bring you bliss forget the fact that such bliss is temporary. In our examples, the pig is happy until it becomes fat enough and is butchered for its meat. A girl feels sweet until her sweetheart says goodbye to her someday. Yes, the truth may be cruel and it does hurt at the beginning. But if you face it bravely and undauntedly, it becomes invaluable experience in your life, just as knowledge becomes power that is endowed to you forever. P.S. Long time no article because I am lazy. This article is a piece of homework for our writing class. Mr. Kumar gave me a high score but I think that if it was not for assignment then I must have written a better one. I disliked Kumar before because of his odd pronounciation. But I like him now because he appreciates my work. |
